This page contains information about the development and implementation of the NEMSIS Version 3 Dataset.  This new version of the dataset is scheduled to be released in the summer of 2010.  The revision process is conducted in concert with the acquisition of an American National Standards Institute (ANSI) Approval of the NEMSIS Dataset.  ANSI approval requires the use of a Standards Development Organization (SDO) to help harmonize the NEMSIS standard with other national standards in the pre-hospital and emergency department settings.  Health Level 7 (HL7) is a recognized health care SDO, and NEMSIS has chosen this organization to accomplish this task.

The Version 3 revision has included input from users and vendors of software products. Vendors create products that are used to send and receive EMS data in the proper XML format from agencies to states, then on to the National EMS Database. Users and vendors have extensive knowledge of the NEMSIS schema, and are a valuable resource in identifying where changes should be made to make the system more user friendly, fill identified oversights in the last revision, and still accomplish the purpose of the data collection process.

We are pleased to release the final draft NEMSIS Version 3 Data Set! The goal of these draft release documents is to allow all NEMSIS users, EMS experts, and interested parties to review the dataset and provide comments and/or suggestions.

NEW - August 15, 2010!!

A Wiki is now available to all EMS stakeholders to comment on the NEMSIS Version 3 recommended National and State Elements. The 30-day public comment period will be close on September 15, 2010. Supporting documents, including an Overview of the recommend elements and the corresponding Performance Measures are now available. These materials match the naming convention in the July 1, 2010 NEMSIS Version 3 Data Dictionary.
